Moby Max
A great resource you can use at home is Moby Max. You can download the app on your phone/tablet or you can use the website below on a computer. Students can get on and practice a lot of different skills! They get to use this website in the classroom as well. The log-in information is their lunch number.

Stocking Stuffers
If you have not brought in your stocking stuffers and you would like to, please make sure you send them in by tomorrow! I am asking for each student to bring in 22 small items that a boy or girl would enjoy. We have 12 boys and 10 girls. The Dollar Store and the Dollar Spot at Target are a great place to find these items! Some examples include candy, pencils, erasers, small toys, play-dough, crayons, and markers.

Holiday Party
Thank you so much for all the donations for our Gingerbread House Party! The kiddos had so much fun :)

Interactive Read - Aloud

We have been reading different gingerbread books and comparing them.

Language Arts

We are working on sorting words into categories independently, making our own categories with ideas on each one, as well as multiple meaning words.
For example, trip can mean you are taking a vacation, or your foot got caught on something and you fell.

Math

We have started measurement with non-standard units. This means measuring objects with mini erasers, cubes, dominoes, etc. We read Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree and drew our own Christmas trees. Tomorrow, we will measure our trees with different objects with a partner. Wednesday we will compare projects and put them in order from tallest to smallest.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! It was so nice having a week at home with my puppy, Ollie!! I think he definitely enjoyed it too... what do you think?! My friends and I got up SUPER early Thursday Morning and ran the Gobble Jog through The Marietta Square. It was absolutely freezing, but so much fun!
The kiddos came in SO excited today to tell me all about their breaks too. I love how enthusiastic they are :)

Holiday Pictures
Tomorrow we will be having Holiday Pictures! Make sure your kiddo comes in their best holiday outfit :)  If you want them to change afterwards, please send a change of clothes that are PE appropriate.

Reading Night
Reading Night is coming up on Tuesday, December 5th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. There will be a PTA meeting, a chorus concert, and then reading night. (A flyer will be going home about this tomorrow)
If you would like to participate in a book swap you may send in 1 - 5 gently used books from your library at home from now until Monday, Dec. 4th. During the Family Reading Night, on Tuesday, you will be able to choose new books to you and your family. We had a GREAT turn out last year. Please just make sure to fill out the permission slip on the flyer and return to me so we know your child has permission to donate any books brought in.

Writing / Interactive Read - Aloud

This week we will be researching and learning all about Benjamin Franklin! We will be using a few different research tools such as the internet, videos, and books. Next week, students are using their knowledge about Benjamin Franklin to complete the county informational writing assessment.
We will also be working on our November writing for our writing portfolio.

Language Arts

We took our 3rd County Fluency Test. Students are doing a great job with this so far! By the end of the year, it will be a breeze. They are timed for 2 minutes on addition and subtraction problems to 10. On the back, they are given as much time as they need, with manipulatives on addition and subtraction problems to 20.
This week we are working on missing addend word problems. This is a tricky concept and can be solved using addition or subtraction. An example is:
Amber has 13 games. Tyler has 10 games. How many more games does Amber have then Tyler.

Amber has ___ more games than Tyler.

The math equation would be 10 + __ = 13. You can also use 13 - 10 = __. Students also need to be able to use their strategies to solve these problems.

Don't forget that it is super important that you practice reading books and sight words each night with your child! We are beginning to see the growth in the students who are doing this!!

Time got away from me today and I completely forgot to send home new sight word lists. I have gone through and tested each child on all 220 sight words again to see how we are progressing. These for sure go home on Wednesday.

Towers 101 Lego-based In-School Field Trip
A flyer will be going home Wednesday explaining our field trip on 11/17/17. This will be an exciting time where students will experience an opportunity to build a Lego Tower as a team. Please fill out the registration form and send in the $5 by the end of the week.

Reading/Social Studies

This week we are learning about Thomas Jefferson and all he did for the United States. We will be reading non-fiction books and talking about the text features the books have.

Writing

Students finished their informational pumpkin writings last week!! They turned out so stinkin' cute! I am so impressed with how they have taken on informational writing this week! We also did our October writing for the writing portfolios you will receive at the end of the year.
This week we will be writing a writing piece on Thomas Jefferson together to guide students in the informational writing process.

Language Arts

We are working on sorting words into categories, pronouns and making sure we are adding capital letters when they are needed.

Math

Each of your kiddos has done an amazing job with word problems so far!! It is a lot of work expected for each problem, but they are SO proud of themselves when they have completed the entire problem. We took an assessment on addition and subtraction word problems Monday and jumped right into addition word problems involving 3 numbers. We talked about trying to make a group of 10. If your problem was 7 + 2 + 3, students should add the 7 + 3 first. This will make it easier to solve the problem. We are also starting to understand subtraction as an (Thomas Jefferson) unknown - addend problem and adding 3 numbers. Ask your child to explain a strategy they know how to use when adding three numbers.

We have started all new curriculum for the 2nd nine weeks.

Reading

We have been reading informational books about pumpkins and discussing the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Writing

We began our informational writing this week. We will be using our research about pumpkins to write about how a pumpkin grows. I can't wait to see how these turn out.

Language Arts

We have starting discussing what a pronoun is. These are words you can use in the place of a noun. Her, she, he, them, we, us, etc. We also have started sorting words into categories.

Math

This nine weeks in math, we will be working on addition and subtraction word problems within 20. They have done such a great job with this concept so far!! Students draw a large + under their problem to create 4 separate spaces. One space should be an answer sentence, one is for a number sentence, and two are for strategies. The strategies we use are the same ones we learned at the beginning of the year. We have also started really working hard on our fluency. You should have seen a few small colored papers coming home. This is what we use for fluency. Students only get 1 minute to complete the 15 problems.

Reading and Sight Words

Please make sure you are reading with your child nightly and practicing sight words. I have seen so many sight word check off sheets the past few weeks and it makes me SUCH a happy teacher!! :) The more sight words the kiddos know, the more fluent their reading will be.

Please make sure you are reading with your child nightly, and returning the envelopes on your assigned day :)

This past week we reviewed and assessed many of the concepts we have been talking about for the past few weeks. I want to make sure the kiddos are confident in their ability to understand the concepts and master the standards.

Reading

The concepts we reviewed were how to retell a story and how to describe the characters and setting with details.

Writing

We wrapped up our Narrative writing unit by writing about a time they did met a new friend. Students had to tell me who their friend was, what they did and how they felt being with this friend. They turned out great and I can't wait for you to see them.

Language Arts

This week we reviewed nouns, adjectives and multiple meaning words.Multiple meaning words are words like fly. *A fly is in my food. *A plane can fly.

Math

We have covered a lot of concepts in math this first quarter. These concepts include the meaning of the equal sign, determining if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false, number order, counting and making sets, adding and subtracting by counting and using different strategies, and graphing data using tally marks.

Science and Social Studies

We reviewed weather and where we live on the map.

I have started sending home reading envelopes. If you haven't gotten yours yet, it will be coming Thursday or Friday. I have them spaced out, so I can make sure I am reading with every kid every week. If you have a Monday envelope, please make sure to return the envelope and book each Monday. I will read with the student, and they will get a new book for the week.

Headphones
If you haven't sent in headphones/ear buds for your kiddo, please do so ASAP so we can get everyone on computers to read during Daily 5 (Reading Centers). You can go to the Dollar Tree and find a variety of headphones and earbuds to fit the best needs of your child.

We are still reading The Wizard of Oz! The kiddos ask every day if we are going to get to read more to find out what happens. We just met The Great and Terrible Oz. We have identified key details and practiced retelling what we have read. The students are also practicing identifying the characters, setting and events.

Writing

I love how creative the students are getting with their writing. We are wrapping up writing narratives about our lives. The students will be completing their "September Writing" and writing assessment this week.

Language Arts

I have introduced adjectives to the kiddos and they were getting really excited about it today. We made an anchor chart about different adjectives before they made a Funny Farm. I saw fluffy pigs, purple horses, and skinny cows! They are doing a great job. We will continue to review this as we move on. Students will take a noun and adjective assessment when we come back from the break.

Math

We have continued with +/- 1, 2, and 3! Students have played multiple games to help them understand what it means to add and subtract 1, 2, and 3. They are getting really quick with this. This will help then later when we start doing larger math equations.  You will start seeing small slips of paper coming home. These are the students fluency tests. They are only given 1 minute to complete these problems. If your student does not pass their test, it is okay! Please practice at home to help your student to become more fluent with their math facts.
