Writing

We have finished up opinion writing for the 3rd quarter!! We read a book called Hey Little Ant about a boy who wanted to squish an ant. The ant tried to argue with the boy about why he should save him and not squish him. Students completed the county writing assessment on whether the boy should squish or save the ant.

Language Arts

We are working on the different ways to spell long a. ai is in the middle of the word (Ex: train, rain) and ay is at the end of the word (Ex: hay, play). They have done a great job with this so far. The next thing we will be working on is combining two sentences with conjunctions. We watched Conjunction Junction that I watched when I was in school. I love the School House Rock videos!!

Math

This week we are adding two-digit numbers plus one-digit numbers. They are done such an amazing job with this!!! I know it is a hard concept to understand, but they really grasped this! We have a saying, "Start with the ones, end with the tens" to remind them to always start with the ones place. We also put a T and O over the columns to help remind us which column is which.
Image result for melonheadz marchWe have also been working on adding two digit numbers plus a multiple of ten. This seemed a little harder to them at first, but once we started using a hundreds chart and a number line, the kiddos really grasped this. We are continuing to work on this this week!!

I am EXTREMELY proud of the progress we are making with this.

Spelling Focus
Image result for melonheadz marchOur spelling focus for the week is /_d/, /_t/, /_nt/, and /_nd/. Example words include shed, trot, mint, and band.

Science
This is one of my favorite units of the entire year!!! We are learning different animals and their basic needs. We will be researching animals on various, school and kid approved websites to learn about the different animals. If time allows, each student will get to create a PowerPoint on an animal of their choice. I can't wait to see how these turn out!

Parent Survey
Please go to the link below to take the Parent Survey that rates our school. This gives our school valuable information. Thank you!!

Valentines Day
Valentine's Day is Wednesday!! Please have your child fill in the "from" section only on their cards. This makes it a lot easier when passing out their valentines. We will be doing this after lunch, as a quick activity for the class. We are not allowed to have a party.

Writing

We have been working very hard on our opinion writing!! Students are doing a great job writing about their opinion on their perfect pet, their favorite candy and if the pigeon should drive the bus from the book Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. We will continue practicing our opinion writing this week.

Language Arts

We are working on r controlled vowels (ar, or, ur, er, and ir). We are learning our r-controlled vowels by playing games and completing worksheets. We are also learning how to use commas in dates and in a series when listing items.

Math

We have started learning about comparing numbers using greater than and less than. For example, 68 > 56, 23 < 8, 33 = 33. We are also starting to add within 100, with regrouping. For example 23 + 9 = __

Spelling Focus
Our spelling focus for the week is /_t/, /_ft/, and /_st/. Some examples of these words are pet, gift, and fist.

Writing

Today we began our Opinion Writing unit!! We watched a short video on fact vs. opinion and then played "Would You Rather". Students moved from one side of the room to the other depending on what they would rather do, and some of the options were gross!! Eating a bug or cat food was just one example. GROSS!!! It was fun seeing their reasoning behind their opinion. We do a candy tasting tomorrow and students will write a response on their favorite one and why. Opinion writing is so much fun!!

Language Arts

We are working on inflectional endings (s, -ed, -ing) and the different sounds of -ed. -ed can sound like /id/ (excited), /t/ (soaked), and /d/ (tired).

Math

Base ten is one of our most important units in math! This really helps students to understand the basics of numbers and what they mean. Students are learning that 23 is not just a 2 and 3, but 2 tens and 3 ones. The 2 tens represent 20, and the 3 ones are 3. We are also staring to regroup the tens. For an example, see the picture below.

Stocking Stuffers
If you have not brought in your stocking stuffers and you would like to, please make sure you send them in by tomorrow! I am asking for each student to bring in 22 small items that a boy or girl would enjoy. We have 12 boys and 10 girls. The Dollar Store and the Dollar Spot at Target are a great place to find these items! Some examples include candy, pencils, erasers, small toys, play-dough, crayons, and markers.

Holiday Party
Thank you so much for all the donations for our Gingerbread House Party! The kiddos had so much fun :)

Interactive Read - Aloud

We have been reading different gingerbread books and comparing them.

Language Arts

We are working on sorting words into categories independently, making our own categories with ideas on each one, as well as multiple meaning words.
For example, trip can mean you are taking a vacation, or your foot got caught on something and you fell.

Math

We have started measurement with non-standard units. This means measuring objects with mini erasers, cubes, dominoes, etc. We read Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree and drew our own Christmas trees. Tomorrow, we will measure our trees with different objects with a partner. Wednesday we will compare projects and put them in order from tallest to smallest.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! It was so nice having a week at home with my puppy, Ollie!! I think he definitely enjoyed it too... what do you think?! My friends and I got up SUPER early Thursday Morning and ran the Gobble Jog through The Marietta Square. It was absolutely freezing, but so much fun!
The kiddos came in SO excited today to tell me all about their breaks too. I love how enthusiastic they are :)

Holiday Pictures
Tomorrow we will be having Holiday Pictures! Make sure your kiddo comes in their best holiday outfit :)  If you want them to change afterwards, please send a change of clothes that are PE appropriate.

Reading Night
Reading Night is coming up on Tuesday, December 5th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. There will be a PTA meeting, a chorus concert, and then reading night. (A flyer will be going home about this tomorrow)
If you would like to participate in a book swap you may send in 1 - 5 gently used books from your library at home from now until Monday, Dec. 4th. During the Family Reading Night, on Tuesday, you will be able to choose new books to you and your family. We had a GREAT turn out last year. Please just make sure to fill out the permission slip on the flyer and return to me so we know your child has permission to donate any books brought in.

Writing / Interactive Read - Aloud

This week we will be researching and learning all about Benjamin Franklin! We will be using a few different research tools such as the internet, videos, and books. Next week, students are using their knowledge about Benjamin Franklin to complete the county informational writing assessment.
We will also be working on our November writing for our writing portfolio.

Language Arts

We are working on sorting words into categories independently, making our own categories with ideas on each one, as well as multiple meaning words.

We took our 3rd County Fluency Test. Students are doing a great job with this so far! By the end of the year, it will be a breeze. They are timed for 2 minutes on addition and subtraction problems to 10. On the back, they are given as much time as they need, with manipulatives on addition and subtraction problems to 20.
This week we are working on missing addend word problems. This is a tricky concept and can be solved using addition or subtraction. An example is:
Amber has 13 games. Tyler has 10 games. How many more games does Amber have then Tyler.

Amber has ___ more games than Tyler.

The math equation would be 10 + __ = 13. You can also use 13 - 10 = __. Students also need to be able to use their strategies to solve these problems.
